CDMM delivered full M&E and low carbon design services for the Gaelic School in Portree, a landmark project achieving near net zero operational performance exceeding Highland Council’s energy targets. Designed with a fabric-first, performance-driven approach, the building integrates a biomass heating system alongside Passivent natural ventilation to create a low-energy, high-comfort learning environment. The result is a robust, future-ready facility that significantly reduces operational carbon while maintaining excellent indoor environmental quality. Working within a remote island location, CDMM played a key role in overcoming logistical and programme challenges through close collaboration with the Tier 1 Contractor, supply chain, and local stakeholders. Early engagement and proactive coordination ensured design solutions were deliverable, efficient, and aligned with site realities. CDMM drove value engineering throughout the project, maintaining strict cost control without compromising performance. Our responsive, solutions-focused approach supported programme certainty and contributed to the successful delivery of a high-performing, sustainable educational facility.
